Update on the Commission of Inquiry under resolution 496 (1981) in connection with the Republic of the Seychelles
22 January 1982 – The President of the Seychelles came before the Commission of Inquiry in response to the attack by armed mercenaries on their airport occurring in November, 1981. The president was invited by the Commission to answer questions and turned the tables on them forcefully. President France-Albert René nearly immediately blamed South Africa for the attack, noting that they received convincing evidence of state action. According to the president, one of the armed mercenaries was a former South African intelligence officer, and nearly all of the mercenaries started in South Africa before going to Swaziland to start the attack on the Seychelles. President France-Albert René adamantly declared that South Africa should be isolated from international trade and reparations should be made to the Seychelles for the economic impact of the attack. The Commission is still gathering evidence and awaiting testimony from the captured mercenaries.
