UNRWA Speaks On Insufficient Fuel to Operate
By: Taylor Mangold, Student Reporter*
In the 22 November 2023 Security Council Meeting, the acting Deputy Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Natalie Boucly (as portrayed by an AMUN Staffer), gave a statement to the Council about the ongoing situation between Israel and Palestine. As of now, there are more than 51 active UN-operated sites that provide humanitarian aid to the increasing number of Palestinian refugees displaced due to their country’s conflict. The minimum fuel required to operate these facilities is 160,000 liters per day, however, they only receive 140,000 liters every other day. The Deputy Commissioner-General urged that this is not enough to deliver adequate humanitarian assistance to the already overcrowded facilities, which are stretched beyond capacity. This leaves the UN unable to to provide for the thousands living in deplorable conditions in Gaza. Deputy Commissioner-General Boucly ended the meeting by stating they rely on the Security Council to take appropriate action on what they deem best for the United Nations and Palestinian refugees.
