Third Committee Seeks Change in IDP Rights
Representatives from the General Assembly (GA) Third Committee engage in topics on social, humanitarian and cultural concerns, like the two agenda topics of this meeting: Protection of and assistance to internally displaced persons and the right to food.
IDPs face the distinct circumstances of being lost within their own borders. This separates IDPs from refugees, asylum seekers or returnees. Common reasons for their displacement include violence, human rights violations, disasters or armed conflict as seen in Ukraine. The Global Protection Cluster (GPC), created to collaborate with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), works with the United Nations to discuss strategies to address this challenge. IDP concerns relate to security, social, economic, environmental and other global issues. The Third Committee weighs strategies to secure the rights and freedoms, and Member States’ responsibilities to protect IDPs within their own borders and internationally.
The Third Committee also considers the topic of sustainable and reliable food access, an essential part of human survival. These efforts make up part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the goal of which is to end world hunger and achieve food security for all people. The Food and Agriculture Organization identified four key factors of rising numbers of those suffering from hunger: climate, inequality, conflict and economic crises as seen with the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic brought economic effects such as job loss and high food prices undermining the efforts of the SDG for food security.
