The Holy See: Working Towards Peace and Diplomacy in General Assembly First Committee

By Alex Rodriguez

On 23 November 2024, the Holy See made their position clear in the General Assembly First Committee (GA 1), emphasizing a commitment to peaceful resolutions and prayer as central pillars of their approach.

Representatives Sarah Rakoczy and Sandy Martin of the Holy See, also known as Vatican City, have taken an influential role in the committee. “Our goal is to make connections with everyone, understand their stance on disarmament and get more support for Resolution ZZ,” said Representative Rakoczy.

The Holy See has signed on to Resolution ZZ, which focuses on Amendment 10. This amendment does not implement any immediate disarmament measures but calls for reconvening in 2026 to hold a convention aimed at promoting gradual disarmament. “The goal is to encourage steps toward disarmament rather than immediate action,” said Representative Rakoczy.
