The General Assembly Plenary Prioritizes Conversations of Democracy and the Environment
Education for democracy converges at the concerns of civilians and governments to support democracy and human development, highlighting the importance of educating citizens about democratic principles. This education occurs in the form of election monitoring, decolonization efforts and promotion of good governance, as well as support for institutions that have democratic traditions and human rights instilled. In their efforts, organizations may work with the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF), which is structured to support projects that strengthen democratic institutions. As part of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for education the body placed an emphasis on creating a foundational educational system by establishing a realistic and effective democratic governance with a defined relationship between the government and its people.
Resolution 75/271, Nature knows no borders, details guidelines for biodiversity conservation, restoration and sustainable use. Climate change, over-exploitation, habitat loss and pollution are a few factors that have negatively impacted ecosystems and human well-being. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in collaboration with Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPEBS) urges Member States and stakeholders to halt biodiversity loss and mitigate the impact of climate change. Concepts of mitigation efforts were outlined in the MDGs and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in terms of sustainable use of natural resources, action on climate change and the restoration of and protection of habitats. Representative Tanisha Taariq of South Sudan promotes their primary goal, which is “plac[ing] an emphasis on wildlife poaching and also illegal trafficking across borders.” Member States are working and collaborating on an individual level as well as a whole to ultimately allow the environment and nature, and with it humanity, to flourish.
