Controversy Over Choosing Resolution in GA3

By: Molly Bradley, Student Reporter*

The GA Third Committee discussed how to proceed in protecting the safety of journalists. Three main resolutions outline how to move forward – AA, DD and EE.

The resolution that has the highest likelihood of passing is AA due to the backing from most of the Members from the EU. “This resolution is idealist in nature and united in procedure,” said Representative Ethan Tennant of France. While the resolution has the vote of nearly all EU States, support can also be found from non-Western countries such as Argentina and India.

Resolution AA also has opposition. Many nations have criticized this resolution for its commitment to the Western perspective. Anna Tousley of Kazakhstan said, “Many ideals that are present in AA are Western ideals and so the ideals of non-western countries…are not represented.” Many States have turned to an alternative – resolution DD. Its supporters generally comprise non-Western States such as China, Hungary and the Philippines. Representative Sydney Freund of the Philippines, said “DD is the best option because it’s the most middle ground and it supports State sovereignty while still protecting journalist safety.”

The resolution with the smallest support is EE, whose adherents, such as Rwanda and Guinea, find the most in common with DD supporters, but take issue with the length, redundancy and polarizing language used in resolution DD.
