Ten Ways to Use the AMUN Handbooks
The 2016 AMUN Handbooks are Here!
Every year, AMUN publishes two reference books to assist representatives with their preparations for Conference. Issues at AMUN includes descriptions of the purview of each body, background research and bibliographies on the topics which will be discussed at this year’s AMUN Conference. AMUN Rules and Procedures includes logistical information about the AMUN Conference, a detailed guide on how students can prepare for the Conference, and the rules of procedure for the various AMUN Committees and Councils. This year’s handbooks are now available on the AMUN website. Here are ten ways you can use them to prepare for Conference.
Ten Creative Ways to Use the 2016 AMUN Handbooks
- Practice using the short forms during practice sessions. (Here’s the SC/HSC short form.)
- Use material from Issues at AMUN as the basis for running your own conference. You can find information about using AMUN materials and request permission through our website.
- Conduct a handbook scavenger hunt–which team or student can find the answers to questions about conference policies, rules, or procedures the fastest?
- Make a pre-conference checklist based on Chapter 1 of the Rules and Procedures book to ensure you don’t forget anything.
- Use them as texts for a Model UN class.
- Have your representatives download or print the relevant sections of the handbooks for ready reference and inclusion in their research files or binders.
- Use archived handbooks to see how the coverage or emphasis on certain topics has changed over time.
- Use the topic briefs and bibliographies as starting points for topic-specific research – the hyperlinked UN resolutions and documents are a great place to start!
- Use the Checklist for Resolution Formatting on p. 20 of the Rules and Procedures handbook to test your knowledge about resolution formatting requirements.
- Use the briefs in the Issues at AMUN as a quick-start reference for getting up to speed on current issues before the United Nations.
Order Additional Copies of the 2016 AMUN Handbooks
The handbooks are published primarily in digital format. Nevertheless, each school that registers for AMUN receives one set of printed handbooks. Schools, delegations, or individuals may also purchase a printed copy of one of the handbooks for $2 (or $4 for the set of both).
