Resolution Consensus Achieved in GA 1
By: Gracyn Stroman, Student Reporter*
With only fifteen minutes left of last night’s session, Representatives united to vote on Resolution 1/1. Representative Michael Hammack of Korea remarked on the passing, “Despite the lack of time and debate, we as a body were able to pass a Resolution that will further the goals of making the world a better place.” This resolution passed with a majority vote, ending Topic Area One (biological and toxic weapons).
Resolution 1/1 outlines the course of action in relation to biological weaponry while also reinforcing the utilization of organizations such as Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Guided by the mission of these organizations, the Resolution seeks to establish a panel to work hand-in-hand with the Implementation Support Unit (ISU). Representative Brendan Tabor of Burkina Faso said, “I was in favor of the resolution because I found it to be beneficial since they were not pushing to get rid of biological weapons, but were trying to keep them secure and in check so they aren’t misused.” In passing this, an outlet for future cooperation surrounding biotechnology management and oversight, as well as organizations leading to support the education around biological weaponry has been established.
