Quick Committee Updates

General Assembly Second Committee

The General Assembly 2nd Committee remains divided in deliberations that largely represent division between larger, more-developed states, and smaller less-developed states. The topics of agriculture and ecotourism often involve citizens and organizations from both groups interacting in multiple states. Consensus may be elusive.

General Assembly Third Committee

Member States and Observers were in a heated discussion about creating and maintaining  a migrant database. Spain led the discussion, echoing concerns about accessibility to opting out and protecting privacy.

Commission on Narcotic Drugs

Member States in the Commission on Narcotic Drugs spar over funding. Côte D’ivoire urges more contributions from developed states for programs. The Representative from India demands assurances while the United States welcomes talks, but rejects all funding requests.

United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization

Member States in the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization Executive Board (UNESCO) work diligently to ensure global prosperity is accompanied by increased gender and racial equality in literacy and by new means to push back climate change.

Human Rights Council

The Council was joined by a representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to continue deliberations on the effects of climate change on displaced populations. One resolution draft has been submitted, which concerns the consequences of child and early forced marriages.

Security Council 

Security Council discusses the current COVID-19 pandemic as it continues to spread in Member States. Discussions were had around vaccine creation and transmission rates. Representatives continue to work on a resolution in order to address the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Historical Security Council of 1967 

Representatives had lengthy discussions regarding the situation in Southern Rhodesia, with the possibility of imposing sanctions on the Rhodesian government. The Council changed topics to the situation in Palestine as it has the potential to cause instability in the region. Discussions are being had regarding possible humanitarian aide, but not decisions have been made. 

Historical Security Council of 1990 

Representatives acted quickly with discussions regarding the situation in Iran and Iraq. The body passed a resolution in order to extend the United Nations Iran-Iraq Military Observer Group (UNIIMOG) to observe the cease-fire and maintain stability in the region. The body continues to work on the situation in Central America.
