Press Release: Holy See On Literacy from GA 3
The Catholic Church as one of the world’s oldest institutions has a deep and rich connection to education and literacy. Jesus is a teacher, and the Vatican recognizes and promotes this. In 2010, Catholic Charities had revenues of $4.7 billion, and many of these funds went towards increasing literacy and educational infrastructure. Organizations such as the Sisters of Charity and the order of Jesuits are distributed around the globe, ministering this type of work right now.
With this said, the Vatican advocates that its funding and resources go towards resolutions with the greatest reach of aid for countries around the globe, especially in developing nations. For as Matthew 23:11 tells us, “The greatest among you must be a servant.”
