Press Release: Japan and New Zealand on the Creation of a Human Rights Council
At the meeting of the Security Council held on 5 May 1993, in connection with the Council’s consideration of the item entitled “Situation in Yugoslavia,” the New Zealand and Japanese delegations made the following statement:
The delegations from New Zealand and Japan call on the United Nations to form a Human Rights Council to address and condemn violations of basic human rights, justly interpreted through the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This declaration is made in reaction to the actions of the Bosnian-Serbs against the Bosnian-Muslims. To create this Council we call upon the members of the Security Council to support this for the current effort in the former Yugoslavia, as well as all future human rights violations.
We strongly encourage the Security Council to continue monitoring the ongoing situation in the former Yugoslavia for future developments.
