Press Release: United Kingdom Expresses Disappointment on the Conflict in the Ukraine
Member States in the Security Council, including the United Kingdom, have on multiple occasions attempted to address the conflict in Ukraine. In the first session of this Security Council, many Member States tried immensely to discuss the Ukrainian situation in depth. In the early part of today’s session the United Kingdom, together with the United States, motioned for a moderated consultative session to bring up the maintenance of peace in Ukraine. The United Kingdom’s intention of raising this issue was to discuss the proposed Presidential Statement relating to the conflict in Ukraine. The United Kingdom firmly believes this is a topic of the highest priority and we are disappointed in the fact nothing can get discussed in relation to this topic. It is clear to us that the Russian Federation has focused on keeping the topic of Ukraine off the agenda, when the United Kingdom raised the proposed Presidential Statement to the Council, we were told that again raising this issue is “a waste of time.” The main concern from the Russian Federation was over the following statement, “The Security Council recognizes the roadblocks presented by the Russian Federation in setting the agenda topic for the Security Council and the result of direct avoidance by the Russian Federation to fulfill its responsibilities to the Security Council.” The Russian Federation then stated to the Council that they want to bring peace to the region. By opposing this statement, the Presidential Statement as a whole and discussing the Ukrainian conflict in depth, it is clear that the Russian Federation has no ambitions of bringing peace to the conflict. The Member States mentioned are disappointed in the unwillingness of action to take place, but want the Ukrainian people to know that their plight is far from forgotten.
