Press Release from Kenya, Albania and Brazil on the Double Veto in the Security Council
Many delegations within the Security Council are alarmed and disheartened by the recent severe abuse of power within the UN Security Council via the use of the double veto.
While we do not wish to condemn any countries, in particular, we are deeply dissatisfied with the actions taken yesterday and how they disabled the body from carrying out its mandate.
Historically, the double veto has been employed sparsely, owing to its great power. We do not believe this use of the veto was justified in any substantial way, it was done covertly as a means to undermine the consensus of the body and as such represents a severe abuse of power.
Simply put, this crisis has demonstrated the outdated and out-of-touch nature of the Security Council in its current form. Change is needed to create a more democratic Security Council that better represents the people of the world and their interests, rather than the interests of solely great powers.
This exposes a distinct flaw in the Security Council as a whole as well as the seemingly static diplomacy it produces when in committee.
