Press Release from GA Plen on Resolution 1-3

Good afternoon,

Today, a coalition led by the delegations of Viet Nam, the Philippines, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Myanmar and the Russian Federation came together to continue our support for the victims of natural disasters around the world. We can debate this issue forever, but people are suffering, and they need our help. We strongly believe that our draft resolution adequately addresses every Member States’ concerns on the issue, and will be effective in offering solutions to the problems at hand. The two-pronged approach of our draft resolution focuses on improving the efficacy of humanitarian efforts, as well as implementing robust preventative measures in sustainable development.

This Resolution advocates for strengthening the capacity of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and suggests finding a way for the Security Council to utilize the United Nations peacekeeping forces during disasters. It also provides a definition of and legal protections for “climate refugees,” calls for an educational conference hosted by the United Nations Development Program, and advocates for member states to adopt appropriate legislation in order to help their citizens.

These are the solutions that we have debated on. These are the solutions that we believe will help not only emerging economies, but everyone. These are the solutions that will save lives. We believe the approach outlined in this resolution to be most effective in addressing the broad range of concerns that vary by region, and the overwhelming support from the body during the voting procedure reflects this.

We appreciate all of the work that Delegations put into this resolution to effectively help bring real change for all peoples of the world.
