Press Release from Botswana in ICJ

By: Botswana

The Republic of Botswana accepts and recognizes today’s ICJ ruling on Sedudu island. Botswana has already taken hold of the island, placed a national flag and ordered that the island will be officially named Sedudu island. Sedudu island will be incorporated in the Chobe National Park, a natural reserve, and all environmental laws will be applicable. This decision not only brings peace and justice after over 100 years, but also protects the rich, diverse fauna in the area from the lacking Namibian environmental laws. The Republic of Botswana will patrol its border and ensure that the Masubian tribe respect our sovereignty and rules while being allowed to seasonally visit Sedudu island. Furthermore, the Republic of Botswana will hold a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal Namibian poachers infringing our border and environmental laws.
