Op-Ed: Joining Staff

I have never once regretted joining AMUN’s Secretariat. As a Representative, I hesitated to apply because my field of expertise was incredibly different from what I assumed a Secretariat member’s should be. After joining, I quickly discovered how diverse the staff is, and how our different backgrounds help improve the conference’s quality.

At AMUN, staff play various roles, some of which are not directly visible to Representatives. While we have many staff members from political, diplomatic and legal backgrounds, we also have educators, students, medical experts, linguists, mathematicians, computer engineers, historians, scientists, thespians, sales associates and clerks. It is safe to say that we all have various interests with one common factor across the board. We love AMUN.

While some remain in one department, staff members have the opportunity to explore different positions, including leadership: at AMUN, staff always find room to learn and grow. The staff develop both professionally and socially in a way I never expected, and I am incredibly grateful for every moment I have as a staff member. I feel valued and honored that AMUN allows me to utilize my passions and skills to create a positive experience for representatives and fellow staff.

My second hesitation was because I was nervous about the interview. But I did not need to come with a resume and it was a lot more casual than I expected! Essentially, they asked about me and learned who I am. Even before officially joining the Secretariat, I felt incredibly welcomed and heard, which has only continued to this day.

Not only do we work together to make this conference possible, but we are also like a family. I believe that is why we still have staff members from 1990. AMUN has become my favorite part of the year. Within my two years on staff, I have made friends I hope to have for the rest of my life.

Even if you are hesitant or have doubts, I encourage you to go for it: apply to join the AMUN Secretariat! I promise you will not regret it. I mean, I know for sure that I have not.
