Letter to the Editor: UAE’s Response to the Press Release on Literacy from the Holy See in GA3
As a nation deeply devoted to our Islamic values, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) follows teachings from the Quran that emphasize the importance of knowledge for both men and women. As the Prophet Muhammad teaches, all individuals should have the ability to pursue an understanding of the metaphysical world through education.
The UAE has spent time and energy aiding the development of literacy initiatives across the international community. The Dubai Islamic Bank recently spearheaded a $3.25 billion financing facility for GEMS Education, the largest private K-12 education provider in the world. Additionally, Dubai Cares has played a key role in helping achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 aiming to ensure inclusive and quality education for all. This organization, also sponsored by the UAE, has successfully funded over 250 educational programs within 60 developing countries to decrease dropout rates and increase enrollment. These initiatives have ameliorated the educational divide between men and women.
The UAE acknowledges the values of all religious affiliations and is willing to help fund any initiatives that work towards a more literate society.
