Kingdom of Denmark: Press Release on the Opinion of the Court
Dear Esteemed Colleagues,
Today the International Court of Justice ruled on the historic case between the Kingdom of Denmark and the Republic of Finland regarding the construction of the Great Belt Bridge, in the year 1992.
After vigorous research of international law and considerations of all aspects of this case, the Court ruled in favor of Denmark allowing the continued construction of the bridge, signed by nine of the fifteen Justices. Their ruling carefully balances the nature of state sovereignty and the right of innocent passage. Construction of a vital bridge will provide great opportunities for both the Kingdom of Denmark and the continent—building not only a physical, but also a metaphorical bridge further connecting nations.
The Kingdom of Denmark wants to thank the Justices for their diligence on the well-developed opinions they presented. Both nations accept the jurisdiction of the Court and we respectfully acknowledge the positions of the Republic of Finland. The Kingdom of Denmark will continue to work toward future endeavors with the Republic of Finland.
Again, thank you to the Justices for upholding our state sovereignty and allowing for the continued growth of a further connected Europe through the construction of the Great Belt Bridge.
