GA First begins to Discuss on the Second Topic: Youth and Disarmament

By: Maggie Li, Student Reporter*

GA First passed the resolution 1/1, which dealt with the prohibition, development, production and stockpiling of bacteriological and toxic weapons, on Sunday night. The committee then moved into discussion on the second topic: Youth Disarmament and non-proliferation. This topic is focused on the relationship between youth and disarmament, specifically education for non-proliferation in youth, approaches for youth participation  in disarmament-related issues and reducing the victimization of youth in conflicts.

When addressing the fundamental implementation of disarmament and non-proliferation, youth, with their significant potential to ensure peace and reduce conflict through innovative thoughts, occupy an important position. To maximize the willingness to resolve conflict and ensure the long-lasting peace, GA First has established Youth4Disarmament and the United Nations Security Council has written Resolution 2250, urging Member States to set up mechanisms that enable young people to participate meaningfully in the peace process. Unfortunately, barriers persist for youth attending other international institutions, raising concerns about the extent to which young people can engage in the field of disarmament and non-proliferation.

Representative Piseth Morn of Italy said, “If the local government can be more open to gather more information from youth, it not only can benefit all of the people, countries, but further prompt United Nations to create more programs, conferences, institute of training youth, to bring in peace and stability from the next generation.” Member States are expected to build consensus about education, access to discussion in the international conferences and prevention of youth being victims in the conflict between adults  during this conference.
