GA 1: Press Conference Introduces New Goals
By: Gracyn Stroman, Student Reporter*
The Republic of Niger requested a press conference addressing their stance on biological weaponry. Before the press conference, Representative Mansur Kasali said, “having engaged in intensive diplomacy with Member States, the Republic of Niger has reached an opinion that a significant number of proposals so far are punitive in nature, and we stand the risk of perpetuating the same policy missteps we made over the past 78 years on the issue of biological weapons.”
During the press conference, Representative Kasali introduced the creation of a specialized United Nations organization which would consist of a regional body under the umbrella of an international forum. This regional body is designed to share information and research relating to biological weaponry. The Representative believes that this will not only encourage Member States and citizens to continue seeking resources, but will further mitigate the need for biological weaponry.
Representative Jonah Krompart of Albania asked about how this would be integrated into a resolution; Representative Kasali explained the plan to break from previously tried solutions and said, “We don’t want to stay stuck in past ideas.” Through the creation and integration of unique and resourceful solutions, Representatives of Niger are confident that cooperation will bring consensus.
