By Zachary Danevicz
Collaboration between Member States will be needed to adapt with a changing world. The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is focusing on progression of social and economic practices while also discussing human rights and the freedoms everyone has as a person.
Member States will focus on aligning topics within the 2030 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This agenda acknowledges 17 SDGsto better the state of the world and garner collaboration to connect nations. Representative Ting Sumarli of Pakistan said, “Pakistan will play an active role in helping to develop a consensus on the measure for recovery from the current crisis and revive the prospects of achieving the SDGs.”
Of the 17 goals within the 2030 SDGs, Goal five is of utmost importance. Goal five focuses on achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. Representative Gwen Blevins of Haiti said, “We are working to empower women, increase education [and increase] resources to women who are experiencing violence, especially in crisis zones.”
At the current rate of progress it will take 140 years for equality in workspaces, 286 years to remove discriminatory legal practices and 300 years to end all child marriage (Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: The Gender Snapshot 2022). Representative Blevens continues, “Haiti hopes that this is a big help for women in rural areas and crisis regions. Haiti is currently in a crisis situation and we believe that protecting women during this crisis situation is of the utmost priority.”
The ECOSOC committee will continue focusing on finalizing ideas and working to achieve the SDGs 2030 goals.
