GA 1: Controversy Flares over Proposals for Christian World Domination
By: Molly Bradley, Student Reporter*
A group of States in the General Assembly First Committee put forth a proposal during a press conference to establish Christianity as the world-dominant religion. Such States, namely Iceland, Ireland, Albania, Switzerland, Ethiopia, the Holy See and Samoa, hope to implement this in their attempts to establish peace and educate the rest of the world.
Switzerland has confidently undertaken the monetary responsibility of this effort. “The financial aspect [of this endeavor] is in the good hands of the oldest bankers of the world,” said Representative Kendall Wiggins of Switzerland. Switzerland intends to fund the purchase of bibles, communion and similar items needed for Christian practices.
There is strong opposition to this proposal. States such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bulgaria have shared their frustration with this policy. “The UAE believes in tolerance, not only across ethnicity, but also across religion and other identifying characteristics,” said Representative Jordan Collins of UAE. “[In the Middle East] we recognize how radicalism can impact the livelihoods of civilians. The UAE would like to express its deep dissatisfaction with any delegation that suggests that Christianity should be the only ideology and instead would like to promote an attitude of tolerance and acceptance amongst the many individuals present here today.”
