Chile and Mexico Shine a Spotlight on South America in HSC 2003

By: Ethan Lehman-Pace, Student Reporter*

In a press conference, Representatives of Chile and Mexico brought to light some issues that they felt were under-addressed by the Historical Security Council of 2003 (HSC). While the HSC addresses the issues in Iraq, these two Representatives feel that the rise of terrorism in and around Colombia is being ignored. They went on to describe how terror groups have set up safehouses in Colombia and that these groups, such as the IRA, FARC and more, are all working in tandem and sharing secrets.

The two Representatives feel as if the HSC needs to pay attention to this growing threat and commit to efforts to curtail terrorism internationally. They also believe that these terrorist groups are a threat since they are funded by, and are facilitating, the global drug trade. The Representatives were sure to acknowledge that while the situation in Afghanistan is dire, it is not directly connected in this case and that there is no evidence that they have found of narcoterrorism in Afghanistan.
