Breaking News: Security Council Faces Crisis in the Middle East

11:00 pm: The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, UNAMI, reports that Iranian ground troops have crossed the border into the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Fighting has broken out between Iranian troops and Kurdish forces near the city of Sulaymaniyah, close to the border.

11:20 pm: The Security Council agrees to set the agenda to the Kurdish crisis.

11:34 pm: After an extended discussion between the Security Council about an Albanian motion to bring Iraqi, Turkish and Kurdish Representatives in as parties to the dispute, the Security Council moves into a suspension of debate for 40 minutes.

12:15 am: Member States of the Security Council are discussing a Presidential Statement on the Kurdish situation after the suspension of debate elapsed.

12:37 am: The Representative from the Islamic Republic of Iran entered the Security Council after being invited to speak on the Kurdish situation.

12:45 am: The Iranian Representative is facing multiple questions regarding their deployment of ground forces to Iraq. The Iranian Representative accused Israel of smuggling arms through Iraq to the Islamic Republic of Iran in their justification of the move, stating that, “the evidence [of weapons smuggling in Iraq] is compelling and we do not negotiate with terrorists.”

1:01 am: Following the departure of the Representative from the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Security Council has gone into a suspension of debate for 30 minutes.

1:22 am: A situational report from the Secretary-General’s Office reports that fighting continues in the Kurdistan region of Iraq, with reports on the ground stating that the Islamic Republic of Iran is pushing Kurdish forces back. Iraq has condemned Iran’s actions and has demanded they remove all of their ground forces from Iraq.

1:40 am: Member States invited Iraq as a party to the Kurdish situation, then went into a 30 minute suspension of debate to further draft resolutions addressing the situation.

2:28 am: The Representative of Iraq has begun answering questions, with issues of their support for the Kurdish people, actions against the Islamic Republic of Iran and similar issues relating to the crisis.

2:40 am: Reports from the Secretary-General’s Office indicate an escalation of the Iranian military operation in Iraq, with Iran being accused by Kurdish forces of purposefully shelling a civilian hospital. This comes only moments after the Iraqi Representative left the Security Council after the end of questions for the Representative.

3:00 am: The Security Council has voted for 10 minute suspension of debate to discuss subjective matters on the Security Council.

3:06 am: Representative Zane Phillips of Kenya stated, “the Kenyan delegations sees it impossible for the Iraqi government to not engage in talks with Kurdish representatives. Iraq must work with the international community and Kurdish forces to prevent Iran’s continued bullying of the Kurdish people.”

3:22 am: Representatives voted for a 10 minute suspension of debate to finish drafting a resolution to address the Kurdish crisis.

3:50 am: Member States of the Security Council have passed Resolution SC5.
